Elk City

Elk City has been sweeping the blogs. Their rock stylings bring to mind the Pixies while their vocal sound is reminiscent of Patti Smith. Former Luna guitarist Sean Eden is also part of this band.

The album, New Believers, is due out on April 17th from Friendly Fire.

Tacks, the Boy Disaster

Tacks, the Boy Disaster--their name is one that gets attention. The Austin band of four is quite familiar with the local scene, having played with popular acts Voxtrot and Peter and the Wolf. Their sound is indie rock, gentle and whimsical with astute instrumentation. Their 2006 album entitled "Oh, Beatrice" holds only seven tracks, but all of them solid, beautiful tunes.

Singer and keyboardist Evan Jacobs was a founding member of fellow Texas band Midlake (another rising group) as well as a contributor to the Polyphonic Spree. Busy busy. The quartet just wrapped up a partial tour prior to SXSW, but keep an eye out for future dates - they're a great one to watch.

Watson Twins

Every year I stumble upon some stellar show at SXSW without meaning to. This time around, it was the Watson Twins.

It happened this way. I was scheduled to see Duncan Sheik's showcase at the Central Presbyterian Church (the most fantastic venue of the year in my opinion.) Somehow I was early—a truly rare thing. I took a seat very quietly among the pews and began watching the two women at the front. Both dressed in white, their dark brown hair a perfect contrast, they seemed angelic. Their smooth, slow vocals washed over the audience easily, thanks in large part to the church's acoustics.

These calm California ladies have received great reviews for their 2006 summertime release "Southern Manners," as well as their work with Jenny Lewis on "Rabbit Fur Coat." They tour occasionally, including quirky little stops like Marfa, Texas' much-loved Thunderbird Motel

Teo Leo + Pharmacists

In a recent post, I mentioned "All Songs Considered," a fantastic tool in discovering new and/or under the radio music. Last night the show hosted Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, an innovative experimental rock outfit. Their set was webcast from the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C.

Liz Pappademas with “Eleven Songs”

Liz Pappademas

2006's South by Southwest Music Festival introduced me to Hurts to Purr, a sexy, piano-drenched local band (at the time) that took my breath away. It wasn't until I did the research for my liveDaily review that I discovered that the group was disbanding so coy lead singer Liz Pappademas could return to her roots in San Francisco. Since that time, I've had the 2005 self-titled album on constant play while checking up on Pappademas' solo career regularly. And finally there's good news on that front.

New Travis video: “Closer”

What do Travis and Ben Stiller have in common? Um, I have no idea. But Stiller makes a cameo as a grocery store manager in Travis' video for its new single, Closer.

Band to Watch: Dynah

I've been meaning to write about Austin's own Dynah for over a month now, before SxSW came to town, stealing the spotlight from the everyday, hard-working local bands such as this one and turning me into a music monster.
