This time tomorrow evening, devoted music fans will brave the cold (a rare occurrence in this neck of the woods) for the FunFunFunFest. This single-day music festival near downtown Austin will feature three genre-focused stages with eight hours of constant entertainment. What a smart idea - group like bands together so concertgoers don’t have to traipse back and forth between stages.
The set-up goes like this:
-- The Indie Stage hosts eight hot bands, including Octopus Project (3:30-4:15,) Black Angels (6:30-7:15,) Peaches (7:30-8:30,) and Spoon (8:50-10:00.)
-- Punk Stage highlights include the Applicators (4:14-4:45,) Riverboat Gamblers (6:55-7:40,) and Circle Jerks (8:55-10:00.)
—The Austin Fuzion Stage focuses on electronica and DJ skills. Stand-out performances are expected by Thomas Turner of DJ Mel (7:50-8:50,) and Prefuse 73 (9:00-10:00.)
The concept behind this Austin shindig is simple: provide a fun environment that showcases not only local talent, but national underground artists. With several massive festivals already pulling on music fan’s purse strings, it’s extra nice that the last-minute ticket price is a mere $25. Don a thick coat and check it out.

1998’s Grammy award winning, genre classic, Car Wheels On A Gravel Road is Lucinda Williams opus—it’s her absolute masterpiece. These meticulously crafted sad, southern stories and instrumentation ultimately took three different cities and three different producers to get right. Beginning in Austin, then moving the recordings to Nashville with Steve Earle helming the controls, and finally setting up shop in Los Angeles with producer Roy Bittan. It’s the L.A. sessions that became the final album we know today.
This two disc reissue, some eight years later, gathers alternate takes of studio cuts and a second disc of live versions from the supporting tour of that year. Theses alt versions shed some light on other directions the mood and atmosphere of the album could have taken; but what would have been preferable is a second disc entirely made up of the session outtakes from the various locations and producers. Maybe the folks at Universal are saving those for a future Lucinda box set release, who knows.
RIYL: Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Uncle Tupelo, Kathleen Edwards, Bob Dylan, Ryan Adams

You can hear the DJ give a little more history about Contact Kid aka Rob Corradetti, who created Mixel Pixel, at the end of this Streetlab remix. Matty Kaukeinen, Kaia Wong and Matt Snee make up the rest of the group. Corradetti & Wong also make up the band Eastern Stars who have been talked about at MOKB as well.

In my neglect of the local Phoenix/Tempe scene, a lot of great music has come or is coming out that requires my catching up.

Gilby Clarke first rose to prominence in the early '90s as the rhythm guitarist for Guns N' Roses. Most recently, however, Clarke is best known as one-fourth of the new group Rock Star Supernova, which also includes Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee and ex-Metallica bassist Jason Newsted. The trio's search for a lead singer was the focus of CBS Television's recently concluded second season of its "Rock Star" talent-search series, through which the band hooked up with its new frontman, Lukas Rossi. Clarke recently spoke with Rough Mix about how the group was formed, what it was like bringing Rossi into the mix and more. Listen Now | Subscribe at iTunes
