You may be asking yourself, “hmm, do I really need yet another ’70s reggage/dancehall/ska compilation in my life?” and to be honest, no, you probably don’t, but if you do happen to have a crisp twenty and some change burning a hole in your pocket, per usual Soul Jazz Records is happy to take your money. They took mine just last week when I picked up their latest Jamaican funk & soul compilation featuring eighteen tracked culled from old 1970’s dusty 45’s.
As a student of history, these kinds of sets are often filled with some of my favorite stuff to come off the island, as it’s the co-opting of American r&B and soul, as seen through a Jamaican lens. Often, this regurgitation and transformation of American music proves to be some fascinating listening, be it sixties Cambodian pop, African JB’s tributes, or in this case Jamaican soul.
